In 1921, the thriving Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, known as “Black Wall Street,” was one of the wealthiest Black communities in the United States. This prosperous community became a target of racial violence in one of the most devastating massacres in American history. A mob, fueled by racial tensions and false accusations, attacked Greenwood, looting and burning businesses, homes, and churches to the ground. The assault left hundreds dead or displaced, and while survivors sought justice, the tragedy was largely omitted from public records, labeled a “riot,” and many details were systematically erased.
Inspired by this legacy, Erased brings to light the resilience and perseverance of those who rebuilt in the face of unimaginable loss. The musical honors those who lost everything and the generations who continued their fight for recognition and equality, reminding us that stories of triumph must not be forgotten.
